Neptune Krill Oil Health Claims Approved by Health Canada - Nutraceutical Business & Technology

Neptune Technologies & Bioressources Inc. is proud to announce that after rigorously reviewing NKO's safety and clinical research data for 2 years, the Canadian Minister of Health has approved its therapeutic and risk reduction claims, corroborating aspects of Neptune's clinical research and substantiating NKO's safety and effectiveness on certain prevalent chronic diseases (cardiovascular health, inflammation and women's health). 'Health claims are the most important drivers influencing the purchase of omega-3 supplements worldwide. With this outstanding achievement, Neptune reinforces its position as a gold standard in the krill oil market,' said Andr Godin, CFO. The Health Canada review process is considered to be one of the most rigorous worldwide, involving an extensive assessment of the accuracy, validity and evidence supporting the proposed clinically proven health claims. 'The Food and Drugs Act, which regulates health claims, requires that they be scientifically supported and not misleading,' said Dr Wael Massrieh, Director of R&D. 'In June 2009, Health Canada approved health claims for omega-3, among the strongest of which was the claim that products providing 1-3 g/day of FJ3A + DHA (3-10 g/day of fish oil or 6-20 softgels) help to reduce serum triglyceride levels; a dose of four NKO softgels has recently been approved for the same indication. Health Canada also approved a stronger claim for NKO for cholesterol: two softgels/day can decrease LDL and increase HDL. In addition, an anti-inflammatory claim was awarded for the use of one softgel/day as well as a specific claim for premenstrual syndrome,' he added. 'The new claims compare well with those already approved for fish oils; not only have they been accepted at much lower doses, they also offer more specific health benefits in cardiovascular, joint and women's health,' said Godin. 'This strategic milestone is expected to have a positive effect on sales because it fulfils new consumer requirements,' he added. A list of the approved claims can be found at www.myNKO.com.
