CANOLA/RAPESEED

A new canola crushing plant will come online in 2009 near the town of Munich, North Dakota, USA, according to Agweek magazine. The plant, which is being built by Northern Prairie Specialty Oils LLC, is expected to produce approximately IO million gallons (almost 38 million liters) of expeller-pressed canola oil per year, the report noted.

Burcon NutraScience Corp. ofVancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and its partner, Archer Daniels Midland Co., announced in October that two of Burcon's canola protein isolates, called Puratein and Supertein, have attained selfaffirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status. According to the companies, the canola protein isolates are the first to achieve GRAS status.

CACAO

Cacao (Theobroma cacao L) has IO genetic types, not the three previously thought to exist. This finding may help geneticists and agronomists breed new strains of cacao that resist some of the diseases that currently plague it.

Researchers, led by Juan C. Motamayor of US candy maker Mars, Inc., suggest that the species - until now thought to have originated in Central America instead can be traced to South Americano an area near Ecuador and Colombia. The study appeared in the online journal PLoS ONE (doi: I O.I 37 1 /journal. pone.00033l I).

Archer Daniels Midland Co. (ADM) has opened a new cocoa-processing plant in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, USA. Products made at the Hazleton plant will include chocolates, cocoa liquor, cocoa butter, and cocoa powder, according to the company. ADM, which says it grinds I 5% of the world's cocoa supply, has five other cocoa-processing plants in North America and another seven worldwide, with another under construction in Ghana.

FISH OIL/MEAL

Ocean Nutrition Canada Ltd., a supplier of fish oil to the omega-3 fatty acid market, is investing $19 million to expand capacity at its molecular distillation plant in Mulgrave, Nova Scotia, Canada. The company is also constructing a second fish-oil manufacturing plant through a joint venture with Alicorp S.A. of Peru.

A patented process from GE Water and Process Technologies and Norcape Biotechnology produces a highquality, low-cost, fish-derived protein that is available to food manufacturers. The ingrethent is a cost-effective alternative to whey-protein isolates, a GE official said in a report by Food Navigator, com.

Krill - the shrimplike crustaceans at the bottom ofthe food chain in Antarctic waters - may be unable to breed if predicted increases in the level of atmospheric carbon dioxide occur by the year 2 1 00. A pilot study conducted by So Kawaguchi ofthe Institute of Antarctic and Southern Ocean Studies at the University of Tasmania found that captive-bred krill developed deformities and lost energy when exposed to increased carbon dioxide, according to www.abc. net.au.

FLAXSEED

OLIVE OIL

California olive oil producers must now uniformly label their oils by a consistent, international standard, thanks to legislation signed into law in October by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Previously, the state's definition of 'olive oil' did not include standard grades used by the International Olive Council, including 'extra virgin olive oil,' according to a report by the San Luis Obispo Tribune newspaper.

In Finland, llmajoen Osuusmeijeri dairy has introduced a cheese in which milkfat has been replaced with liquid olive oil. The dairy has developed the cheese in cooperation with Spanish olive oil company Borges, according to www.finfood.fi.The dairy previously introduced a similar cheese in which rapeseed oil replaces milkfat.

The National Olive Oil Association of Italy has trained 20 police officers to differentiate counterfeit extra virgin olive oil from the real thing by taste alone, according to London's The Daily Telegraph newspaper.

Spain has begun a campaign to promote the use of olive oil in India, focusing on the health benefits ofthe oil. The Indian Olive Association says consumption of olive oil in India has increased by 73% in the last two years, according to a report by the Asia Pulse newswire. Olive oil consumption is projected to reach 42,000 metric tons by 20 1 2, growing at a rate of 75% per year, the report said. India also is collaborating with an Israeli firm on the cultivation of a 250-hectare pilot olive plantation in Rajasthan.

PALM OIL

Canadian ingrethents company SunOpta is collaborating with Daabon Organic USA to distribute organic palm oil products. SunOpta's Grains and Foods Group will distribute Daabon's product line of organic shortenings, stearins, and olein, the companies said.

Sime Darby Plantations Sdn. Bhd. has become the second Malaysian palm oil company to achieve sustainability certification from the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil's (RSPO) principles and criteria, according to The New Straits Times Press of Malaysia.

SOY

OJSC Creativ group of Kirovohrad, Ukraine, plans by the end of 2008 to open a soybean crushing plant with a capacity of 750 MT/day, according to the Ukraine Business Daily.

Novozymes and Solae will work together to develop and market new soy proteins with distinctive functional and nutritional benefits, the companies announced in October.
