Company Description
Aker BioMarine Antarctic LS is a wholly owned subsidiary of Aker BioMarine ASA, Oslo, a vertically integrated biotechnology company dedicated to sustainability and uniquely positioned to create krill-derived biotech products. Aker BioMarine is the only krill ingredient marketer that is primary in its supply, providing 100% traceability from its harvesting vessel in the pristine Antarctic waters through the proprietary manufacture of its krill ingredients. This novel extraction process results in the unique composition of Superba[TM] Krill. In vitro, in vivo, and human clinical research has demonstrated the safety and efficacy of Superba[TM] Krill. Moreover, Aker's dynamic Research and Development team continues to unlock and substantiate krill's health benefits. Numerous studies have been published including three human clinical studies published in the past 18 months alone; many additional publications are scheduled for 2011.
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has awarded Aker with MSC Certification for the company's adherence to responsible and sustainable management of krill in the Antarctic eco-system. Aker BioMarine is the only krill harvester to receive MSC Certification.
Technologies, Patents, New Products
* Superba[TM] Krill
Superba[TM] Krill is a pure, natural source of the health-promoting phospholipid EPA & DHA omega-3 essential fatty acids and the naturally occurring antioxidant astaxanthin. Omega-3 phospholipids are considered to be an effective system for delivering the omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA to tissues. In fact, in vivo and human research with phospholipid EPA & DHA from krill oil demonstrates higher uptake of omega-3 fatty acids in red blood cell membranes (omega-3 index), improved blood lipid profiles and increased uptake of DHA in brain tissue compared to other omega-3 fatty acid sources.
* Eco-Harvesting[TM]
Aker BioMarine has developed Eco-Harvesting[TM], an environmentally responsible way to harvest krill and effectively prevent the accidental by-catch of fish, birds, and marine mammals. Using a submerged net, the krill remain in the sea during harvesting and then are gently siphoned onboard. Immediate processing inside the ship's advanced production facility results in the freshest, highest quality end products.
