Slavery in Aviation in Mombasa? BenAir Engineering Limited Exploiting Employees

Workers are overworked, with very little pay at BenAir Engineering Limited

A leading Mombasa based aviation maintenance company, BenAir Engineering Limited is being accused by labour unions in Kenya of ruthlessly exploiting its employees. The Company owns the Mombasa Air Services and is owned by the Cleave family, based in Mombasa. Captain John Cleave is the Chairman of the aircraft maintenance company and its airline sister company, MAS.

According to reliable information received on this blog, employees including maintenance technicians earn as low as Ksh.5000($60) per month, workers are said to be overworked to meet increasing demand for scheduled flights due to high tourist numbers with little or no extra pay. All workers are also not unionized, according to a reliable source.The source told us that the work conditions at BenAir Engineering Limited are akin to slavery, with the company capitalizing on the healthy tourist numbers at the Coast without proper compensation for its employees. Said the source,"It's very  INHUMAN for an aircraft technician to be paid 5k per month"

Mombasa Air Services(MAS) flies scheduled flights to scenic wildlife destinations in Kenya including Maasai Mara,Lamu, Ukunda, Malindi. The airline recently acquired a DC3 TP aircraft.

Benair Engineering Limited was granted an Authorised Maintenance Certificate (AMO), based at Mombasa's Moi International Airport, to service the MAS fleet and undertake third-party maintenance to other airlines such as Bluesky Aviation. Benair Engineering Limited is also an authorized agent of  Russia's LET Aircraft Industries.

While we applaud the growth of the aviation industry in Africa, practices such these are not only greedy, unethical and inhumane, but also compromise the safety and standards of aviation in the African Skies.We hope these allegations will be investigated henceforth by relevant authorities in the Ministry of Labour and proper action to ensure the rights of workers to better pay and conducive working conditions are upheld.
